At to the bottom of the Jack-in-the-pulpit there's a fleshy corm that has a zing when you bite into it. Well that is to say the least. I had never tried it so I gave it a shot. I pulled up a Jack-in-the-pulpit and washed off the corm and then cut a tiny sliver out of it. I bit into that and in about five seconds it felt not so much hot like hot pepper but like about a hundred knives were cutting into my mouth. It was intense. They say children used to play practical jokes on each other by talking them into taking a bite into one of these Indian turnips. As a practical joke it would have been a mean one.
