Cactus


This is the cactus that is native to Indiana, Opuntia humifusa. This cactus is growing in Sand Ridge Cemetery, which is on the other side of South River Road from Fort Ouiatenon. The cactus gets sliced up some as they mow the cemetery in the summer, but it seems to survive OK. Another place in Tippecanoe County that has Opuntia humifusa in its native habitat is in some of the sandy soil near
Wea Creek in Shadeland. This picture was taken April 29, 2009, but you can see the cactus there any time of the year.
