
This tree is a Douglas Fir (
Pseudotsuga menziesii). To the left is the Recitation Building. I've seen a photo of this part of the Purdue campus that was taken in 1925 and this was a big tree even then, so likely this was planted here well over a hundred years ago. This photo was taken Dec. 30, 2008.

There is another smaller Douglas fir at the NE corner of University & State streets. If you look on the ground you can find the distinctive dead mouse cones of the Douglas fir near both these trees.
